OUR HISTORY – OUR ROOTS

The Hanover Lawn Bowling Club has been around since 1909.

That’s a lot of history.  This image is of the original clubhouse in the 1920’s.    Membership was “Men Only” at the time.   As you can see, even then it was an incredible social club.

History 1920s

This poster of our fall Triples (Trebles) event in 1962 paints an interesting picture.

– 21 Greens (which we still have today)

– 3 – 14 end games.  (we typically play 8 end games now)

– $2.50 entry fee “Per Man” – (today’s tournaments are generally $30 which includes snacks, meal, and desert)

– phone numbers were just 3 digits.

Tournament-1962

A white-on white dress code for everyone

Up until early 2000, the prescribed attire, for both men and women, was white.  White pants, white, shirt, white hat.

Today, people just wear what they are comfortable in. The shoes however, to protect the greens, need to be flat soled.  In tournaments, members of the same team should wear the same colour.

Early 2000s

We’ve come a long way.  Today, we are a fully inclusive diverse group of people that enjoy the social aspect of lawn bowling.  It’s a casual atmosphere with a small serving of compettiveness for those who want it.
